A Walk to Remember

This annual memorial walk is the first Sunday in October. It is for all parents and families who have lost children at any time, either in the recent or distant past because of miscarriage, stillbirth, infant and childhood death. It is also for those caregivers who are involved in the lives and support of these families. The walk is co-sponsored by the SwedishAmerican Foundation.

A Walk to Remember

Memorial Luminaria

This annual program is held in November, the Saturday before Thanksgiving and is a chance for all area residents who have experienced the death of a loved one to come together in remembrance. Families are encouraged to personalize and decorate their loved one’s luminary bag with photographs, poems, letters or any artistic decoration. The funeral home provides the bags, candles, markers, glue and stickers. At dusk the luminaries are placed outside around the funeral home followed by a memorial program honoring our loved ones.  Refreshments are provided throughout the evening. It is a very special time for reflection, sharing and remembrance.

Memorial Day Parade

This annual event is held during the Memorial Day festivities on Memorial Weekend.  The parade kicks off at 9:00 a.m. from 7th Street, Downtown, Rockford, IL. With the help of the Blackhawk Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America and the Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois, the folded flags of the Veteran families that Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory has served in the past are carried in the Annual Veteran’s Memorial Day parade.  It was with great pride that we honor them for their sacrifices and pay tribute to them in one of our community’s most commemorative events.

Operation Honor Guard

Operation Honor Guard provides charitable assistance for Honor Guard Details through a statewide fundraising event.  Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory was chosen as the local funeral home by the founder of Operation Honor Guard, Richard Darby,  to raise awareness in the  Northern Illinois Region.  In partnership with WTVO/WQRF television stations and other sponsors around the area, the community is encouraged to support their local VFW, American Legion and Viet Now posts who provide Military Honors  for their fallen brothers and sisters.

Operation Honor Guard™ has been created by Support Our Troops® to assure that the proper dignity, respect, and gratitude are given to fallen American soldiers and their families during military funerals. On March 2, 2011 the Supreme Court in Snyder v. Phelps, et al, 131 S. Ct. 1207 (2011) , ruled that the First Amendment protects the right of ne'er-do-wells to visibly and audibly protest in the face of family members at the funerals of their beloved sons and daughters who have recently died in military service to us and our country. Thankfully, this freedom of speech also applies to those of us who wish to politely and properly honor the life of these fallen soldiers and their families by delivering in positive manner the respect and gratitude due them during this time of bereavement and loss.

We are honored to have been chosen to participate in this important fundraiser.  For more information visit the website  www.operationhonorguard.com
