Alfred Michael Vollmer

September 8, 1938 — February 23, 2015

Alfred Michael Vollmer left this life on February 23, 2015, to be forever with the Lord. Born in Rockford, IL. Sept 8, 1938 to Carl and Betty Vollmer. Lived all his life in Rockford, graduating from St. Thomas High School in 1957.Served in the US Navy aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS Forrestal. On Nov. 17,1962 he married Frances Sager, who he loved deeply. Together they had three beautiful daughters. Al was employed for 36 years at Atwood Vacuum Machine Co as a Maintence Electrician. He was a certified First Aid and CPR. Instructor for the American Red Cross. As a member of the Boy Scouts of America he served in many positions, Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 37, Unit Commissioner, Scout Leaders Training Staff, District Advancement Chairman, was an active member of the Catholic Committee on Scouting, and a member of the Order of the Arrow. Al’s fellow Scouters presented him with the District Award of Merit, the Silver Beaver, and the Saint George Award, Among his hobbies were fishing, woodworking and playing golf and playing cards. After his retirement he started building miniatures and built two dollhouses and over a half dozen room displays. He was a member of GRAMS (Greater Rockford Area Miniature Society.) Member of the Cathedral of St. Peters where he served as an usher, Extraordinary Minister and on the Parish Life Committee for the Church. Was a 3rd degree Member of Knights of Columbus Muldoon Council 470 and 4th Degree Member of Assembly 190.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years Frances, daughters Donna (Brad) Lashock, Theresa Vollmer, Annemarie (David ) Melton. Grandchildren Michael and Steven Lashock, David Jr., Deanna, Darren, and Dean Melton. Sisters, Violet (Maurice) DeVlieger, and Joanne (Jerry) Greenlee. Brothers, James (Mollie), John (Kim) Vollmer. Sister-in-law Yvonne Vollmer. Predeceased by his parents, and brother Carl and sister Mary Alice Krull

Visitation from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, March 1, 2015, at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, 3910 N. Rockton Avenue, Rockford. With a Rosary to be recited at 5:30 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, March 2, 2015, at 10:00 a.m. at Cathedral of St. Peter, 1243 N. Church Street, Rockford, with Fr. Stephen St. Jules officiating. Burial in Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will continue from 9 am until 9:45 a.m. Monday at church. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the family.
