Ann Marie Gier

Rockford, died peacefully on Thursday, March 1, 2012 surrounded by family. She was born as Dolores Marie Gierszewski on February 26, 1924, in Milwaukee, WI, the daughter of Edward & Helena (Stanislawski) Gierszewski. She entered the convent at the age of 14. At the age of 18, she became a Bride of Christ and changed her name to Sister Annamarie. She graduated from Holy Ghost Academy in 1942. She received her B.A. from DePaul University in 1949, with an English Major and a Minor in Latin and in 1951, received her B.A. from DePaul in Creative Writing. Ann Marie was a religious missionary in West Africa and Asia. She taught in Accra Ghana, West Africa and Fu Jen University, Taipei, Taiwan. After returning to the United States, she was employed at Roosevelt University in Chicago as Director of the English Program for foreign students, and eventually retired to Rockford, IL to be near family.Ann Marie was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and also attended St. Mary Oratory.Survivors include her brother, George (Wanda) Gierszewski of Oak Creek, WI; sister, Edith (Sierlecki) Heinkel of Rockford; brotherinlaw, John Maro of Milwaukee, WI; sisterinlaw, Mary Sierlecki of Richmond, VA; many dear nieces and nephews; great nieces and great nephews; greatgreat nieces and greatgreat nephews; dear friends and former students whose friendship and kindness was cherished for many years.Predeceased by her parents, Edward & Helena, Stepfather Peter B. Sierlecki, brothers, Peter M. Sierlecki and Richard Sierlecki; sisters, Geraldine (Gierszewski) Maro, Marion (Sierlecki) Agnello, Genevieve (Sierlecki) Preiss, Helen (Sierlecki) Wittmann; brothersinlaw, Richard Heinkel and Gil Preiss; sisterinlaw, Carol Sierlecki.Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 A.M. Thursday, March 8, 2012, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 4401 Highcrest Road with Rev. Msgr. Glenn L. Nelson, J.C.L.,V.F. officiating. Visitation will be from 9:30 A.M. until time of service on Thursday at the church. Burial in Calvary Cemetery in Milwaukee, WI on Friday, March 9. Memorials to the Bishops Stewardship Appeal. Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory, 1860 S. Mulford Rd. Rockford, IL 61108 assisted the family.
