Bernard W. Wilhelmson, 92, of Rockford and formerly of Skokie, died Saturday, July 30, 2011 at Fairhaven Nursing Center. Born January 9, 1919 in Evanston, the son of William and Lilly Wilhelmson. Graduate of Evanston High School and attended Northwestern University until he entered into the US Army. He served in the 84 th infantry and was part of the Railsplitters and honorably discharged as a Captain. On November 21, 1942 he married his loving wife Ruth Johnson in Chicago. Bernie was a sales manager in P.O.P. (Point of Purchase) merchandising and worked for Advertising Metal Display Company in 1956. In 1962 he was promoted to the Chicago Division Sales Manager, where he was responsible for the Midwest sales force. He also owned and operated his own display company before joining AMD, and finally retired from H. King Associates. nbsp;After retiring, he and Ruth came to Rockford and settled in the Fairhaven Community where they have made numerous friends over the years.nbsp; He was and active anbsp; faithful member of his church in Summerdale and continued his faith in Rockford attending many services at Fairhaven and First Evangelical Free Church. nbsp;Bernie took time to enjoy fishing, golfing, old cars and had a passion for water color painting.nbsp; He was a kind and caring man who enjoyed his family very much, he will be missed dearly by all. Survivors include his wife of 68 years Ruth Wilhelmson; son, Robert (Betty) of Mahomet; daughter, Nancy Wilhelmson of Red Wing, MN; grandson, Bradley (Molly) and a great granddaughter on the way. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Katherine Swanson and brother-in-law, Martin Swanson.nbsp; A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, August 2, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at Fairhaven Nursing Center Chapel, 3470 N. Alpine Rd.nbsp; Interment will be held in Ridgewood Cemetery, Des Plaines, at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Fitzgerald Funeral Home and Crematory is assisting the family.
