Darrick R. Wardenburg

August 30, 1971 — November 21, 2013

Darrick Roger Wardenburg died peacefully in his sleep on November 21, 2013, after a four year battle with ALS. Darrick was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on August 30, 1971, to Roger and Karen (Geery) Wardenburg. He was a loving son and much loved by Karen and Roger. He inherited much of his father's gregarious nature and sense of humor. He enlisted in the United States Navy after high school graduation. He then was awarded an ROTC scholarship and attended and graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in Speech Communications. He continued his service in the Navy Supply Corps until 1999. He married the very lucky Christine Layng on October 16, 1999, after a courtship that traveled from Georgia to California and then to Chicago. Darrick and Christine had two beautiful and spirited children, Clayton and Katherine. They loved their father and helped and cared for him many times during his illness. Clayton was Darrick's buddy and Katherine was Daddy's princess. Darrick landed his dream job as a project manager at Supply Core Inc. He loved the work, his co-workers, and St. Peter! He was an active member of St. Bridget's Catholic Church and also a third degree Mason. Darrick loved life. He loved his family, friends, fantasy football, Iowa and Pittsburgh teams, telling stories, pulling pranks, and helping others. Thank you to the doctors, nurses, caregivers, family and friends that have carried Darrick and Christine through the hardship of the last four years. Your kindness and love will never be forgotten. He was predeceased by his father Roger, and both sets of grandparents. Survivors include: wife Christine Layng, children Clayton and Katherine Wardenburg, mother Karen Wardenburg, sisters Jennifer (Robert) Taylor and Victoria Wardenburg. Numerous relatives on both sides will miss Darrick. He was beloved by all. Memorials made in lieu of flowers to the Les Turner ALS Foundation and Shriners Hospitals for Children.
