Donald L. Read

Donald Lee Read, 80, Rockford, passed away in his home on July 18, 2013 surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Rockford on August 26, 1932; the son of Homer and Iona (Calkins) Read. Don graduated from Rockford West High School in 1950. Don was a proud US veteran, serving as a Sgt. 1st Class in the Army during the Korean Conflict. He attended Northern Illinois University and received his Bachelors of Science degree in 1958. He married his former wife, Bernice (Krowczyk) Lawver in 1961. He worked in sales for Quaker State Oil Refining Corporation for more than 32 years until his retirement in 1994. Don enjoyed golfing, billiards and watching college basketball. He was a member of Second Congregational Church. He is survived by his sons, Brian (Dawn) Read of Bartlett, IL and Mark (Beth) Read of Belvidere, IL; brother, Homer Read of Flushing, MI; grandchildren, Brittany Read, Brett Read, Whitney Read and Garrett Read; niece Diane Guhl of DeKalb, IL; special friend, Diane Thompson. Predeceased by his parents; brothers, Jack Read and Clarence Read; sister, Marian Adams. Funeral Service at 11:00 am on Tuesday, July 23, 2013 at Second Congregational Church, 318 N. Church St. Pastor Fred Krauss officiating. Interment in Willwood Burial Park Cemetery. Visitation from 6:00 – 8:00 pm on Monday, July 22, 2013 at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Mulford Chapel, 1860 S.
