Nelson G. "Bergy" Bergdorf

January 15, 1934 — July 2, 2015

Nelson “Bergy” Garfield Bergdorf
Nelson Bergdorf, 81, of Roscoe, Illinois, went to be with the Lord on July 2, 2015 at home with his loving wife at his side.
Bergy was born on January 15, 1934 in Akron, Ohio, the son of Glenn and Nellie Bergdorf. After graduation from high school he worked at Firestone Tire & Rubber Co. in Akron, Ohio. Bergy went into the Navy in December 1954 where he was sent to Africa for a short time. He returned to Patuxent River, Maryland where he served out the rest of his enlistment. Bergy was very proud to have served in the Navy and always thanked any service members he saw for their sacrifice.

Bergy spent most of his working years as a computer systems analyst and worked at many companies including Babcock & Wilcox Company plants in Akron, OH, Rochester, MI and Rockford, IL. After being retired for several years he went to work as a facilities assistant at the Rockford Rescue Mission. He found that to be the most satisfying and rewarding job of his life. He loved being able to help people and his sense of humor found him many friends. Bergy was also a wonderful woodworker and left many beautiful pieces to be enjoyed by family and friends. Bergy was an active member at Elim Baptist Church in Rockford. His 5 “girls” were his world and his life revolved around seeing them happy.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Beverly (Lawver) Bergdorf, his high school sweetheart; daughters Anita Myers of Loves Park, Vicki McGill (Mike Haseman) of Marengo, Debbie (Levell) Kepner of Machesney Park and Kristi (Charlie) Hudson of Akron, Ohio. He leaves 8 grandchildren, Brittany Wiegert (Ryan Long), Kathryn Wiegert, Nicole Kazuk, Bradley Kazuk, Jeffrey (Brittany) Kazuk, Zacheri (Lindsey) Kepner, Jakob (Amy Pacheco) Kepner, and Cooper Hudson. Great grandchildren Rylan Estin Kepner, Griffin River Wiegert, Lilyana Mae Kepner , Aubrey Joy Kazuk, many wonderful friends, and his favorite dog, Shonny.
He was preceded in death by Glenn and Nellie Bergdorf, Brother Kenneth (Butch) Bergdorf, Sister Lillian Wiley, granddaughter Addie Grace Hudson, son-in-law Stephen Myers and great grandson Carter Liam Kepner.
