Virginia F. Kinney

June 26, 1917 — March 31, 2015

Virginia F. Kinney, 97, of Rockford passed away peacefully on March 31, 2015 at Alpine Fireside Health Center. Born June 26, 1917 in Hazel Green, WI, the daughter of Joseph and Gladys (Schnorenberg) Lynde. Graduated from St. James School and Bishop Muldoon High School in 1934. Married her loving husband, John “Jack” Kinney, at St. James Church in Rockford on September 30, 1939. Virginia worked for Wortham’s Department Store where she managed the shoe department for seven years during WWII and then owned and operated Kinney Hardware Store for 45 years before retiring. She and her family were longtime members of the Cathedral of St. Peter and she stayed very active with The Ladies of Columbus, Ladies of St. Peter, and the Altar and Rosary Society at church. Her passion and talent in hat making was evident to all of those who cherished her many creations. Virginia’s beautiful smile, her deep love of family, friends, and Fannie May, and her unwavering faith in and love of God will be remembered and deeply missed.
Special thanks to the caring staff at both Alpine Fireside and Hospice Care of America, as well as to friends Mary Ann Doherty, Peg & Tom Miller, Judy Rossato, and many of Virginia’s nieces and nephews and their spouses, who gave generously of their time and support.
Survivors include her children Joan (Tom) Campion of Aurora, Kristine Drake of Albuquerque, NM and John P. (Carole) Kinney of Placitas, NM; grandchildren Christopher, Joseph and Thomas M. Campion, Elizabeth Biewer and Shannon Nelson; great grandchildren Lindsay Willis, Samantha and Payton Campion, Ian Nelson, Jacob Biewer, and Jack Mitchell; great great-grandchild Carter Fannon; sister Patricia Tietz; numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1988, son-in-law, James Drake, her 2 sisters Leona and Marie, and her 2 brothers Bob and Joe, along with their spouses.
Funeral Mass Tuesday, April 7, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at The Cathedral of St. Peter, 1243 N. Church St. Visitation will be Monday, April 6, 2015 from 4 – 7 p.m. at Fitzgerald Funeral Home and Crematory, Riverside Chapel, 3910 N. Rockton Ave and continues on Tuesday at church from 9:30 a.m. until time of prayer at 10:15 a.m. A private burial will be held in St. Mary/ St. James Cemetery.
