Alfred W. Cowan, 89, went home to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on September 26, 2026. Born on December 8, 1936, to Alfred W. Cowan, Sr. and Marjorie C. Cowan in Chicago, IL. Al is survived by his wife of 62 years, Susan (Flink), who was his best friend and Christian companion. He is also survived by his children, Sarah Helland (Doug) of Marietta, GA, and John Cowan (Marty) of Fort Collins, CO, and grandchildren Grace Helland, Clayton Cowan, and Graham Cowan.

For many years, he was an adult literacy tutor, a tutor at Rockford Rescue Mission, and a reading tutor in Rockford elementary schools. He was a Stephen Minister and a long-time group leader in Community Bible Study for men. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Belvidere, IL.

He was a 1954 graduate of West High School, a 1958 graduate of Beloit College, and a 1962 graduate of the University of Illinois College of Law. He was an Assistant State's Attorney in Winnebago County and later practiced law in the Rockford area, concentrating in trials and appeals of civil cases. He served in the Illinois Army National Guard.

Al was an avid photographer and a reader of history. He was blessed with a wonderful family.
