Allen M. Mathewson, 71, sadly passed away in Rockford on Tuesday, May 12, 2026. Born on August 12, 1954, in the small town of Bushnell, Illinois, one of three sons to Howard and Agnes (Carrico) Mathewson. Professionally, Allen dedicated himself to Estwing Manufacturing for over 30 years, serving in various roles until his retirement just last year, as their Safety Director and medic. His commitment to safety and service went beyond the factory, as Allen proudly volunteered with the Bushnell and Stillman Fire Protection Districts over the years. On May 26, 2006, beneath the open skies of a park in Ogle County, Allen would marry his beloved Rita. Their union would not come with just companionship, it also sealed in the title Allen was most proud of, “Grandpa.” He loved to share his sacred pool with his grandchildren and great grandchildren; easily becoming a haven where family gathered, laughter rang clear, and time was measured only in sunshine and splashes. As a devoted Illinois sports fan, Allen could be found celebrating any win from the Chicago Bears, Cubs, college basketball or football games. He also enjoyed being a handyman around the house, and his time woodworking, specializing in cabinetry.

He is survived by his beloved Rita; her children Ali Nieman and Dustin Cook; his honorary grandchildren Dominic (Brianna) Garcia, Carmela (Fiancé Enrique Shankle) Moedano, Arianna “Meli” Gonzalez, Collins “Coco” Cook, and Gatlin Cook; great grandchildren Kyro, Khalani, Josiah, and Catalina; his brothers Chuck “AJ” (Sue Anne) Mathewson and Chris (Brenda) Mathewson; nieces and nephews Jason, Jamie, Scott (Brittany), Michelle, and several great nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents Howard and Agnes Mathewson.
