Obituary

With profound sadness we announce the passing of Carol Jean Guschl on March 3, 2026, at the age of 78. Born in Milwaukee, WI, Carol’s early years were spent amidst the natural beauty of Rindge, NH, and later in Wauwatosa, WI. At Wauwatosa East High School, she met Thomas Guschl, her lifelong partner, whom she married in 1968 and cherished until his passing just 14 months prior.

Carol’s academic journey was marked by excellence. She earned a degree in Radiology Technology in Milwaukee, graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree from Rockford College and later earned a master’s degree from Northern Illinois University. Her professional career spanned clinical work at Rockford Memorial Hospital, teaching radiology technology at Sauk Valley College, and directing the radiology technology program at Kishwaukee College where she influenced many aspiring healthcare professionals.

Her childhood was rich with outdoor adventures alongside her sister Charlotte and their canine sidekicks, collie Angus McTavish and dachshund Gretchen. Growing up on a farm, the girls explored orchards, woods, fields, and the shore of Lake Monomonoc, fostering Carol’s love of science and nature. Family friends, whom she affectionately called her “fairy godparents,” nurtured her love for books, classical music, and good food, leaving a lasting imprint on her life.

Known for being a soup maven, Carol delighted in cooking and entertaining, welcoming friends, family, and neighbors into her home with warmth and generosity. Alongside her friend Tammy Long, she devoted herself to costume design for Stillman Valley High School musicals, a pursuit that continued well beyond her son Matthew’s graduation. Her love of dogs was reflected in her Lifetime Membership with the Forest City Dog Training Club, where she and her pointers earned numerous titles in obedience and agility.

Music was another lifelong passion. She played clarinet in high school and later performed with the Rock Valley Community Concert Band, Kishwaukee Valley Concert Band, Kable Band in Mount Morris, IL, Rockford Concert Band, and several pit orchestras at Starlight Theatre. She was also a member of the chime choir at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mount Morris.

Carol is survived by her son Matthew Thomas Guschl, her sister Charlotte Allmann, brother-in-law Ray Allmann, sister-in-law Jean Guschl, and nephew Craig Allmann. Carol was preceded in death by her beloved husband Tom, her parents, Betty and Herb Studer and her brother-in-law Robert Guschl. She is lovingly remembered by cousins, neighbors, and friends who admired her zest for life, kindness, and generosity. Her German shorthair pointer Rigel remains in vigil at the window.

Carol Jean Guschl’s legacy is one of love, dedication, and the profound impact of a life well lived. Her memory will continue to inspire all who knew her. Her life will be celebrated with an open house party on May 17, 1–4 p.m. at Kresge Hall in the Riverfront Museum Park, 711 N. Main St. Rockford, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to the Rockford Wind Ensemble, or Noah’s Ark Animal Shelter.
