Obituary

Carol M. Smith, 87, passed away on June 10, 2026, just three days short of her 88th birthday. Carol was born in Erie, Pennsylvania on June 13, 1938, daughter to Carl and Catherine (Robinson) Ankiel. In Erie, Carol married Stephen R. Smith, and she took pride in making their house into a home for their family. As their kids grew up, Carol took great care to nurture and maintain a strong, loving relationship with each of their children. Life’s paths brought the family to Rockford, Illinois and once grandchildren started arriving, she became one of their avid supporters; attending local activities and celebrating their achievements from the sidelines with pride. Carol found joy in the simple pleasures of life, her talents shone brightly through her crocheting and baking. Once Stephen retired the two hopped into their RV, ready to have as many adventures as they could. Those adventures brought them to the Gulf of Mexico, Texas, and winters in Louisianna to spend time with their daughter Deborah. Carol and Stephen were married for 63 cherished years until his passing in February of 2021.

She will be missed by those who loved her most, her children Stephen (Darlene) Smith, Deborah Wilkes, Kathleen (Daniel) Janczak, and Marjorie Smith; eight grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and brother-in-law, Tom May. She is predeceased by her beloved Stephen; son in law Larry Wilkes; sisters Shirley May, Catherine “Kay” (Fred) Ralph, as well as their parents Carl and Catherine.

A heartfelt thank you to the caring staff of Trustwell Living at Cherryvale Place, their compassion and kindness meant so much throughout Carol’s final chapter.

Cremation rites have been accorded to Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory, 1860 S. Mulford Road, Rockford Illinois 61108. Graveside services will take place at a later date; Carol will be laid to rest next to her husband at Arlington Memorial Park in Rockford, Illinois.
