Obituary

Charles Gerald Walter, Rockford, IL passed away at his home on July 13, 2026. Charles was born in Dekalb, IL on May 8, 1939. He was affectionately known as “Chuck or Gery” to his friends and family. Chuck graduated from Shabbona High school and continued his education at the prestigious Ray Vogue School of Arts in Chicago. He had a fabulous eye for design and style. His career started downtown Chicago at Goldblats where he designed the windows at Union Station. Later he was drafted into the US Army and served as a medic. Soon after, he relocated to Seal Beach, CA where he met his long-term partner, Fred Mitchell and began working for Robinson’s-May Department Store where he was quickly promoted to a prominent international buyer. Chuck thoroughly enjoyed traveling the world importing beautiful furniture, art and priceless antiques. Chuck and Fred enjoyed life together near the beach to the fullest, with a multitude of wonderful friends as well as their eight beloved dogs for over 40 years. After Fred’s death, Chuck decided to move back to Illinois to be closer to his brother, David and his family. Chuck had a deep love for animals, especially dogs and was very charitable towards local animal rescue. He also loved the game of tennis. He rarely missed a Grand Slam event on television and also attended many in person, Wimbledon being his favorite.

Chuck is pre-deceased by his father, Raymond Walter and mother, Evelyn O’Donnell Walter and his partner, Fred Mitchell. He is survived by his brother, David Walter (Lori), sister, Margery Walter Jordon, nieces and nephews, Adam Walter (Aimee) Kelly Walter Owens, Jennifer Walter Vaughn (Ryan) Jill Meyerson, Eve Meyerson and grand nieces, Brynn Walter, Skylar Walter and Emma Vaughn.
