Craig Michael Clayton, 78, of Rockford, died peacefully surrounded by his family on March 8, 2026. He was born on April 17, 1947 in Streator, Illinois the son of Charles Russell and Constance Lorraine (Noon) Clayton. Mike graduated from Streator Township High School and was drafted into the Army, where he served as a medic in the Vietnam War. After returning to The United States, the G.I. Bill allowed Mike to attend Rock Valley College where he earned an Associate's Degree and met Kathleen J. Wheeler. Both Mike and Kathleen then graduated from Northern Illinois University. Mike truly enjoyed his accounting career at Sundstrand where he was employed for 38 years and made great friends along the way. He was a devoted father and grandfather. His favorite things to do were spending time with his family and having a beer with his friends. His favorite song “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” by Bobby McFerrin set the tone for his way of living.
Survived by his loving wife, Kathleen; children, Nicholas (Laura) and Natalie (Eric) Mowbray; grandchild, Hailey. Predeceased by his parents; brothers, Tom and Jon; nephews Mark and Eric.
Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 13, 2026 at St. Rita Catholic Church, 6254 Valley Knoll Drive, Rockford, IL 61109. Visitation will be held prior to Mass starting at 10 a.m.
Memorials may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (www.nationalmssociety.org), Heritage Museum Park in Rockford (www.ethnicheritagemuseum.org) and the American Lung Association (American Lung Association)
