Obituary

Doris A. (Sammons) Chambers, passed away peacefully on August 19, 2026, in Rockford, Illinois, at the age of 83. Born on August 4, 1943, in Freeport, Illinois, the daughter of Orval and Armella (Vondra) Sammons, Doris’ life was marked by a steadfast devotion to her family. Doris married James Walter "Wally" Chambers on February 1, 1964, at St. Bridget Catholic Church, and spent a wonderful 33 years together before his passing in January of 1997.

After graduating from Harlem High School in 1961, she embarked on a career as a data entry operator at Atwood. She worked there for over 30 years until her retirement in 2001. She made many friends at work and cherished their friendship her whole life.

Doris was an avid bowler and actively participated in many leagues. She also enjoyed taking “mystery” bus trips, going to casinos, playing cards with neighbors and traveling throughout the US. But her family was everything. Many vacations were spent with her parents, brothers and sister and all their children on lakes in Northern Wisconsin and Minnesota. Her greatest joy in life was spending time with her children and grandchildren. She tried to attend every event of theirs and was so proud of who they have become as adults.

In 1998, Doris was blessed to meet her second companion, Leo Brokish. Together, they shared many wonderful years filled with love, companionship, and cherished memories until Leo’s passing in 2020.

Doris was a lifelong member of St. Bridget Catholic Church. Her connection to her faith provided her with great strength and inspiration.

A loving, kind, and devoted individual, Doris’ warmth was felt by all who knew her. Her nurturing spirit and unwavering support for those around her will be remembered as some of her finest qualities. She leaves behind cherished memories that will continue to inspire and comfort those who knew her.

Doris is survived by her children, Laura (Chuck) Isely and Larry (Sue) Chambers; grandchildren, Daniel Isely, Christian (fiancé, Liz Schulz) Isely, Kaitlyn (fiancé, Juan Pablo Romano) Chambers, Jacob (Rachel Baird) Chambers, and Owen (Paige Matthews) Chambers; siblings, Dick (Rose) Sammons and Ellen (Phil St. Clair) Schlichting; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; and special friend, Daisy Reese. She is predeceased by her husband, Wally; companion, Leo; and brothers, Dennis and Jeff Sammons.

The family would like to give a special thank you to Lincolnshire Place and Sanctuary Hospice for their wonderful care of Doris.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of America.

To honor Doris A. Chambers’ life, visitation will be held on Monday, August 24, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory - Mulford, 1860 S Mulford Rd, Rockford, Illinois.
