It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Duane Alan Zaugg on May 25, 2026.
Duane was born in Rockford, IL, to Jerry D. and Carol I. (Fritsch) Zaugg on June 4, 1957. He married Candice Pixler on July 13, 1996, in the backyard of their home.
One of Duane's proudest accomplishments was building his dream home from the ground up on a beautiful piece of land in Wisconsin. With late nights and long days, every detail meticulously poured over. Every wall, every room, he created more than a place to live, but a home; a gathering place filled with laughter and joy, a home where life long memories have been made.
Duane had an exceptional, long, and respected career as a heavy equipment operator. If it had controls, you could bet Duane was the best at operating it. He took great pride in his work; with his work ethic and steady hands, he earned the admiration of those who worked beside him. His career was more than a job-it was a reflection of his dedication and commitment to providing for his family. Many buildings in the Rockford area are standing because of the groundwork he laid. After his retirement from Northern Illinois service, his new passion became off road racing with his grandchildren. You could always find him in the garage ‘tinkering’ on the cars or in the pits at the racetrack with a pilot coffee in hand. From the excitement of race days to the laughter and stories shared in the garage, he created memories that will live on for generations.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 30 years, Candice; children, Kristopher, Justin (Lisa), Joshua, Caleb (Anna), and Zoie Zaugg; grandchildren, Sophia, Zane, Adalynn, Zaylee, Zadie, Ivy, Shaylin, Jameson, Ezra; siblings, Laura Carlson, Dan (Sabine) Zaugg, Linda (Brian) Addotta; and mother, Carol Zaugg. He is predeceased by his father, Jerry and grandson, Jaxson Zaugg.
A visitation for Duane will be held at Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory, 1860 S. Mulford Road, Rockford, IL 61108, on Saturday, June 6, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. through 12:00 p.m. A memorial service will follow at 12:00 p.m. To send online condolences and share memories, please visit www.fitzgeraldfh.com.
