Herman
Krunfus
July 11, 1937 — October 17, 2026
Rockford, Illinois
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Herman Ralph Krunfus on October 17, 2026, at the age of 89. Herman was born on July 11, 1937, in Bartlett, Illinois, to Louis and Esther Krunfus. After graduating from Bartlett High School, he attended the University of Illinois and later joining the Air National Guard. He went on to build a career in aviation as an engineer and pilot, eventually retiring from American Flyers. Throughout his career, he earned the Charles Taylor Master Mechanic Award from the FAA in recognition of 50 years of service without an accident. Herman was a natural problem solver, a true “MacGyver,” and was a diehard Bear and Cub fan. He spent many weekends with his poker club and playing his concertina, which he learned as a child playing in a polka band with his father.
On May 26, 1962, Herman married Judy Runge, beginning a lifelong journey together that started with quite an adventure. After flying into her family’s pasture, Herman found himself in need of a little help with the cows, and Judy came to his rescue. The rest as they say, was history.
Herman is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Judy; his daughters, Karen (Gordy) Montgomery and Susan (Terry) Frost; and his grandchildren, Thane (London Prater) Montgomery, Alex Montgomery, Carley (Taylor) Deaton, Jacob (Ellie) Frost, and Luke (Abby) Frost. He was also a proud great-grandfather to Brixton, Leland, Gordon (IV), and Waylon. Herman will be deeply missed by his family and the countless friends, dear neighbors, and fellow American Legion members whose lives he touched.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Wisconsin Badger Camp, in of Honor of grandson Alex Montgomery.
The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the team at Northern Illinois Hospice and the caregivers at Home Instead for their kindness, compassion, and care.
