James Craig Austin Jr., 59, passed away unexpectedly on July 22, 2026. Born on January 18, 1967, to James and Karen (Lerwick) Austin Sr., Jimmy grew up in Rockford and graduated from Jefferson High School. He went on to build a career as a mechanic, a trade he learned from his uncle and one that suited both his talent and curiosity. If it had an engine, Jimmy could usually diagnose the problem, repair it, and have it running again in no time.

An avid fisherman, Jimmy found peace on the water and enjoyed sharing his love of fishing with others. He was also a devoted movie enthusiast whose collection numbered in the hundreds. Weekly movie nights became a tradition, creating countless memories with family and friends.

Jimmy was known for his larger-than-life personality and ability to light up any room he entered. Friends and family knew that wherever Jimmy was, there would be good conversation, plenty of humor, and a sense that everyone was welcome.

Those who knew Jimmy will remember his open heart, his willingness to help someone in need, and his remarkable ability to make people feel seen and valued. He also had a special love for animals of all kinds. Whether dogs, snakes, or other reptiles, he appreciated and cared for them with the same enthusiasm he brought to the rest of his life.

Above all, Jimmy was a devoted father who worked hard to provide for his daughter growing up and took great pride in who she was becoming. His caring nature extended far beyond his own family; over the years, he became a trusted mentor, father figure, and grandfather figure to many children who came into his life, offering guidance, support, laughter, and simply someone to be there for them.

Jimmy's love of music was well known, especially his admiration for Ozzy Osbourne. Family members have found comfort in the coincidence that the two shared the same date of passing, one year apart, and like to imagine that somewhere beyond this life, Jimmy was greeted by the soundtrack of one of his favorite artists. His absence will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

He will be missed by those who loved him most, his daughter, Amber (Jacob) Ortiz; his grandchildren, Evoleht and Cyra; his father, Jim (Betty) Austin Sr.; his best friend who helped care for him in his final years, Sean O’Brian, and countless others. He is preceded in death by his mother, Karen and his best bud, Bane.
