Jay K. Schafer, a beloved educator and cherished family man, departed this world on March 7, 2026, in the embrace of his family, leaving behind a legacy rich with love, laughter, and dedication. Born on October 6, 1955, Chicago, Illinois, the son of Leon and Jayne (Kasper) Schafer. Jay grew up in Morton Grove and enjoyed the vibrant energy of Chicago, but it was in the tight-knit community of Rockford where he truly made his mark through over three decades of tireless service as a special education teacher. His journey began at Flinn Middle School and concluded at East High School, where countless students were touched by his warmth and unwavering support. Jay married his sweetheart, Kelly Barlow, on May 21, 1983, and together they shared a wonderful life and were blessed with 3 children.

While attending Western Illinois University, Jay proudly wore the colors of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity, embodying the camaraderie he cherished for life. He further pursued his passion for learning, earning a bachelor's degree from Northern Illinois University and a master's from St. Xavier University. Armed with knowledge and compassion, he advocated for his students with unmatched fervor, always emphasizing the importance of not taking life too seriously—the mantra with which he imbued every aspect of his life.

In his youth, Jay showcased his athletic prowess at Niles West High School, where he played football and basketball and ran track, graduating in the class of 1974. These formative years ignited a passion for sports that he carried throughout his life. A supportive fan of all sports, especially the Chicago Blackhawks and Chicago Bears. He was often found cheering loudly from the sidelines, a steadfast supporter at countless games and competitions for his kids hockey and cheer competitions.

Jay's hobbies reflected his zest for life. He delighted in woodworking, finding solace in crafting beauty with his hands, and reveled in fishing at Rock Cut State Park. A history buff and an avid metal detector enthusiast, he ventured on quests, uncovering stories of the past while fostering connections to the present. He especially enjoyed playing cribbage and euchre, often sharing many laughs around the card table with family and friends.

To those who knew him, Jay was lovingly referred to as the pizza maker—a title earned from his Friday night ritual of hosting meals that brought the family together in joyous celebration. The pizzas, charred to perfection on the special stones given to him by his daughter, were as unique and delightful as the moments shared around the table. Sunday mornings were reserved for pancakes and mimosas, where laughter flowed as freely as the drinks, and the warmth of familial bonds enveloped the room.

A kind-hearted soul, Jay was a beacon of humor and encouragement, easily engaging friends and family with his witty banter. His supportive nature showcased the depths of his character, as he was not only a devoted father and husband but also a loving brother, uncle, coworker, mentor, and friend. His stubborn spirit, coupled with his easy-going demeanor, made him a stabilizing presence in the lives of everyone fortunate enough to call him a friend or family member.

As we gather to celebrate his life, we reflect on the indelible mark Jay left on all who crossed his path. In our memories, he will forever remain—a guiding light, a source of unwavering support, and a reminder to embrace life's moments with joy and laughter. Jay K. Jay is survived by those who loved him most, his wife of 42 years, Kelly; children, Jacob, Michael (Amber) and Delaney; brother, Richard (Sharon) Schafer; sister, Sherry DeMattis; nieces and nephews, Meghan (Andrew), Audrey (Emily), Morgan, Tess, Matthew, and Neal; and numerous in-laws, cousins, and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Sandra Schafer.

A Funeral Service will be on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at 3:00 P.M. at Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory, 1860 S. Mulford Road, Rockford, IL 61108, with a visitation prior to the service starting at 1:00 P.M.
