John R. Thompson, 74, passed away at home on April 14, 2026, in Rockford, Illinois. He was born March 9, 1952, the son of William and Florence (Walker) Thompson. John graduated from Boylan Central Catholic High School, class of 1970. He was a simple man who appreciated a simple life. In his younger years, he enjoyed playing baseball at St. Patrick’s Elementary and later in Pony League at Roy Gayle, where his team advanced to the state championship. He remained a lifelong sports fan, especially of the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Cincinnati Bengals, and also enjoyed listening to live jazz in Milwaukee. John will be remembered for his kind heart, steady nature, and his willingness to help those he loved.

He is survived by his partner of 36 years and the love of his life, Jacque Pipitone; his bonus daughter, Mariann Baldwin (Wayne Erickson); his grandchildren, Tia (Matt) Thompson and Kate (Mitchell) Mulcahy; and his great-grandchildren, Carter and Kinsley. He is also survived by his siblings, Judith Smallwood, David (Linda) Thompson, and Robert (Roxanne) Thompson; along with many nieces and nephews, including Lori, Sara, David, Brian, Brad, Jennifer, Brett, Lindsey, Corey, and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Florence Thompson; his sister, Ruth Kelly; brother-in-law, Roger Smallwood; and sister-in-law, Rae Thompson.
