Kathleen “Kathy” Nelson, of Rockford, Illinois, passed away in Rockford on September 19, 2026, at the age of 78. She was born on April 19, 1948, in Rockford, the daughter of Joseph and Ruth (Younkus) Phillips.

Kathy will be remembered as a woman of steady dedication and warm, familiar joys. She received her associate’s degree from Rock Valley College, an accomplishment that reflected her commitment to building a meaningful life and career. She began her working life as an assistant in a dental office and, through hard work and dependability, later became the office manager. Her professional path spoke to her sense of responsibility and the trust she inspired in others.

Beyond her work, Kathy found happiness in the simple pleasures that give a life its texture and grace. She loved to read and treasured time spent going out for breakfast or lunch with her girlfriends. In her younger years, she loved to fish in the North woods and Canada, and throughout her life she remained devoted to the things and people that brought her comfort. She adored her yorkies, Zookie and Meesha, enjoyed watching TV with her son, Scott, and was a loyal Cubs fan. One of her most cherished memories was taking the grandchildren to Disney World.

She is survived by her husband, Paul Nelson; her son, Scott Nelson; daughter-in-law, Julie Nelson; her grandchildren, Elle, Kamyrn, Phoebe, and Rowan; and her brothers, Ron and Scott Phillips. She is preceded by her parents and her son, Ryan Nelson.
