Obituary

Mary J. Creagan, beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 22, 2026, just days shy of her 82nd birthday. Born on August 26, 1944, in Rockford. The daughter of Gerald and Jane (Peterson) Wessels. She married Ed Creagan in Rockford on July 16, 1966.

Mary was a proud graduate of West High School. She carried her love for learning and her energetic spirit into all chapters of her life, inspiring those around her by example and deed.

Mary’s days were filled with simple pleasures and passions that spoke to the depths of her character. She loved playing cards and games, never missing a chance for friendly competition or for laughter shared around the table. An active member of her bridge club, Mary could always be found with a deck of cards in hand, surrounded by cherished friends with whom she played weekly. Her circle of companions was close and dear, bound by countless hours of camaraderie and shared stories.

Her green thumb was evident in her garden, where she found joy among the flowers and vegetables she tended with care. The sights and sounds of birds at her feeder brought her endless delight, as did crafting, shopping, garage sales, and the thrill of discovering a good deal. Mary’s adventurous spirit led her to travel far and wide, collecting memories and moments that she treasured deeply.

Mary’s personality was as bright as her laughter—known for her spirited sense of humor and contagious joy. She was a natural jokester, always ready with a gentle tease or a funny story to lighten any mood. Her laughter filled her home and gathered those around her in warmth and happiness, especially during holidays and family get-togethers that she so dearly loved.

A devoted mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Mary never missed her grandchildren’s games or activities, cheering them on from the stands and sharing in every success and challenge. She taught her children the values of hard work and resilience, offering steady guidance and wisdom on how to navigate through life’s complexities with grace and perseverance.

Mary’s generosity touched many beyond her immediate circle. Her charitable contributions, given quietly and steadfastly year after year, supported causes close to her heart and reflected her enduring commitment to kindness and community.

She is survived by her husband, Ed; her children, Michelle (Duane) Mathewson, Todd (Susan) Creagan, and Holly (Chris) Melvin; her grandchildren, Brittany (Tyler) Witt, Brianna (Zac) Juszczak, Patrick (Kiera) Fitzgerald, Cassidy (Justin) Skinkis, Maddy Melvin, Brenna Melvin, Anna Creagan, Michael Creagan, and Matthew Creagan; her great grandchildren, Olivia, Ellie, Brooks, Charlotte, and Beckham. She is preceded in death by her brother, John Wessels.

Though she is no longer with us, Mary’s legacy lives on in the lives of those who loved her—in the laughter that lingers, in the lessons she imparted, and in the many stories that will be retold over every card game and holiday gathering. Her spirit will be deeply missed and forever cherished.

The family was assisted by Fitzgerald Funeral Home. Cremation rites have been accorded. The family will be having a private celebration of life for Mary. To share memories and condolences online, please visit, www.fitzgeraldfh.com.
