Melanie D.
Meyer
August 19, 1978 – April 16, 2026
Our spark of light, Melanie Meyer, 47, of Machesney Park, Illinois, passed away on Thursday, April 16, 2026, surrounded by loved ones at her home.
Melanie was truly a gift to so many of us. She was someone whose joy and laughter could lift a room without effort. Whether through a perfectly timed joke, a playful smile, or her unmistakable laugh, she made people feel comfortable, seen, and happy just by being herself. Life was more joyful and humorous when she was in it.
Melanie was born on August 19, 1978, in Rockford, Illinois, to Bradley and Shelley Meyer. She was raised in Roscoe, Illinois, and graduated from Hononegah High School. She attended Rock Valley College, where she earned an Associate’s Degree in Science.
Melanie began her career at Chrysler in Belvidere, Illinois, and later made a mid-life pivot by returning to school to become a Respiratory Therapist. She worked for Mercy Health Systems at the Delavan, Wisconsin, facility.
If Melanie had the perfect day, it would be spent close to water—preferably a beach, but a pool would do—on a hot day, paddleboard nearby, surrounded by family and friends, a rescue dog at her side, and her Stanley cup close at hand. Another version of her perfect day was uncovering the best bargain finds to add to her home décor. She had a true gift for making any space feel cozy and welcoming; when you walked into her home, you immediately felt at ease. She had other passions that included growing succulent plants, recycling used furniture into new treasures, and helping friends and family with their interior home spaces as well.
Melanie was one of the most authentic people anyone could meet. She said what she meant, and she meant what she said (and if you knew her, you would understand that statement with much humor). She was strong in every way—vivacious, determined, funny, and fiercely loyal to family, friends, and animals alike. Her generosity was another admirable quality - she gave freely, wholeheartedly, and showed up without question for those she loved.
The brightest light in Melanie’s life was her daughter, Eleana. Melanie was an amazing and truly wonderful mother who passed her best qualities on to her daughter.
Melanie is survived by her mother, Shelley Meyer; her daughter, Eleana Eckelbarger; her sister, Jamie (Greg) Zimmerman; various nieces and nephews; cousins; and a sister/brother village of close friends she considered family, including Rebecca and Brad Bach, Tanya Chambers-Doll, Mariah Doll, Courtney and Anthony Miceli, Rachel Peters, and Evelyn Richards. She was preceded in death by her father, Bradley Meyer.
Melanie’s family and friends would also like to thank the healthcare workers at Mercyhealth’s Delavan facility, especially Hamik Biramian, for all his caring efforts, as well as the doctors and nurses at Mercy, Froedtert, and the University of Wisconsin – Madison hospitals, who supported her throughout her health challenges.
A Celebration of Life service will be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Melanie’s memory to Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary, a local no-kill shelter in Rockford, Illinois.
May her light and love continue to burn bright in all our hearts.
