Obituary

With heavy hearts and cherished memories, we announce the passing of Michael David Bracken, lovingly known as Mike, Big Mike, or Pudge, departed this life on July 28, 2026, in Madison. Born on November 28, 1956, in Kewanee, Illinois, the middle son of Robert and Lois (Schultz) Bracken. Mike’s journey through nearly seven decades left an indelible mark on all who knew him.

A proud graduate of East High School’s class of 1975, Mike carried his dedication and enthusiasm from the classroom out into the world. He cultivated a thriving career, serving as Vice President of Commercial Sales for Carpet Land. His leadership and reliable presence made him both a respected colleague and a steadfast friend. Mike married Jill Selgren in 1998, sharing a blessed 28 years together.

But it was outside of work where Mike’s spirit truly soared. He loved the outdoors, and his zest for life found its perfect stage in a host of passionate pursuits: running triathlons, slicing across the water on jet skis, relishing the tranquility of boating, or chasing the next great round of golf. Perhaps nowhere was he happier than at the lake house, surrounded by the beauty of nature and the warmth of home.

Mike enjoyed watching movies, and sports were an enduring thread that ran through his days. He was a spirited supporter of the Chicago Bears, the Wisconsin Badgers, and the Chicago White Sox—a true fan, loyal through every season. The joy he took in cheering on his teams was more than just about the game; it was about connection, camaraderie, and sharing moments with those around him. Mike's presence filled every room with joy and laughter, and he was the life of any party he attended.

Travel was another way Mike celebrated life. He found delight in vacations to Florida, the lights of Las Vegas, and the striking scenery of Tahoe, Nevada. Each destination was an opportunity to make memories—always with laughter, always with heart.

Mike’s personality was a reflection of his values. He was loving and compassionate, always the one you could count on in moments of need. His reliability and thoughtfulness came naturally, while his fun-loving spirit made him the life of every party. He balanced laughter with empathy, exuberance with deep caring, leaving a reservoir of fond stories and lasting friendships in his wake.

A longtime member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Mike expressed his faith not only through worship but through daily acts of kindness, integrity, and generosity. His faith was a quiet but enduring guide, shaping the man he became and the legacy he leaves behind.

Mike is survived by those who loved him most, wife, Jill; son, Ben (fiancé Amanda Shelton) Bracken; mother, Lois Bracken, stepchildren, Justine (Christopher) Jeter and Nate McClelland; grandchildren, Selah Jeter, Sophia Jeter, Bella, and Sam; siblings, Nancy Baxter, Marc Bracken, Janet Bracken, and Amy (Phillip) Justice; "chosen son", Mike Hoover; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is predeceased by his dad, Deacon Robert A. Bracken.

The family would like to give a special thank you to the Adams County Sheriff’s Department, Ruth Aiello, and UW Madison Hospital.

As we gather to remember and celebrate Mike’s remarkable life, family and friends will have the chance to honor his memory at a visitation on August 4, 2026, from 4:00 to 6:00 pm at Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory – Mulford, located at 1860 S Mulford Rd, Rockford, IL. A second visitation will be held on August 5, 2026, from 10:00 to 10:45 am at Holy Family Catholic Church, 4401 Highcrest Road, Rockford, IL, followed by a Mass at 11:00 am. Final blessings and burial will take place at 12:30 pm at Calvary Catholic Cemetery, 8616 W. State Road, Winnebago, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Adams County Sheriff’s Department.

Michael David Bracken’s light touched many, and his legacy will continue in the stories we remember, the love we share, and the example he set. Though we mourn his absence, we give thanks for every moment he graced our lives, carrying forward his kindness, his laughter, and the enduring spirit of a truly remarkable man, husband, father, and brother.

Psalm 100:2 "Worship the LORD with gladness; come into his presence with singing"
