Michael Taphorn, 75, of Rockford, Illinois, passed away on July 3, 2026.
Born on December 11, 1950, in Rockford, Illinois, Mike was the son of John and Ann (Snyder) Taphorn and a lifelong resident of Rockford.
Mike attended St. James Catholic School and graduated from Boylan Central Catholic High School before earning his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics from the University of Illinois in 1972. He was a proud Illini and a lifelong member of St. James Catholic Church.
Following college, Mike worked at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in Chicago, IL before dedicating his professional career to serving the Rockford community as a United States Postal Service Mail Carrier. He took great pride in his work and was known for his friendly demeanor and commitment to the people along his route, which included the neighborhood he called home.
Mike loved to travel and especially enjoyed visiting and being visited by his foreign exchange students, Yuri, Anton, Mark, Lars, Eiko, and Lasse, with whom he maintained close relationships throughout his life.
Mike was best known among family and friends for his love of cooking and baking. He found joy not only in baking but in sharing what he made with others. Few things made him happier than seeing others enjoy something he had created. He collected hundreds of cookbooks and hoped to publish his own someday.
Christmas Eve at "Uncle Mike's" was a cherished family tradition that will be fondly remembered. Michael loved giving gifts and never arrived anywhere empty-handed. He was an avid movie lover, an enthusiastic reader and always enjoyed a good shopping trip.
Mike will be deeply missed by his family, his many friends and neighbors, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Ann Taphorn; his sister, Mary (Taphorn) Kendzierski; and his nephew, John P. Taphorn.
Mike is survived by his siblings, John (Carol) Taphorn of Rockford, Illinois; Jim (Pat) Taphorn of Rockton, Illinois; and Theresa Taphorn of Rockford, Illinois. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Vito (Makela) Taphorn, Sheila Taphorn, RoseAnn (Justin) Haedt, Mike (Jenna) Kendzierski, and Anne Kendzierski; and by his great-nieces and great-nephews. He also leaves behind many special friends.
