Monsignor Robert James Sweeney, 87, passed away on August 16, 2026, in Rockford. He was born on September 11, 1938, in Evergreen Park, IL, the son of James and Lauretta (Tuohy) Sweeney.
A learned man, Monsignor Sweeney graduated from John Carroll University before entering the seminary at St. Mary of the Lake in Mundelein earning a Master’s in Divinity. He later earned a Bachelors in Canon Law degree, setting the foundation for a life dedicated to intellectual growth and spiritual leadership. His education guided him into a meaningful vocation, and he went on to serve in the diocese for close to 45 years, touching countless lives through his ministry, compassion, and wisdom.
Monsignor Sweeney was not only dedicated to his calling, but also cultivated a life rich in joy and fulfillment outside of his service. He found great pleasure in travel, especially journeys to Ireland that connected him with his roots, as well as memorable cruises that allowed him to experience the beauty of the world.. After serving in the Rockford Diocese, he retired and returned to his roots on the Southside of Chicago, close to his sister MaryLu and brother in law Ted, and a large extended family. At home, he found peace and quiet satisfaction in gardening, curtailing weeds as if they were sins. He ministered to his family community with the wisdom, guidance, support and grace he previously shared in the Diocese of Rockford.
He was the loving “Uncle Father Bob” to five nieces and nephews, Steven (Loralie), Karen, Amy, Jeanne (Barry), and Brian (Mary); his 15 grand nieces and nephews; and three great grand nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, and his sister, Mary Lucille Sweeney.
A visitation will take place on Saturday, August 22, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. until the time of Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. at the Cathedral of St. Peter, 1243 N Church St, Rockford, IL 61103.
