Patricia A. Rinnan, 97, passed away on September 3, 2026, in her hometown of Rockford, Illinois. She was born on March 14, 1929, the daughter of Tirrie and Hazel Prather. Raised on Rockford's west side, Patricia graduated from West High School in 1947 before attending Northern Illinois State Teachers College, now known as Northern Illinois University, where she earned her bachelor's degree in Home Economics.

A chance summer job in Yellowstone National Park led Patricia to the love of her life and helped shape the course of the next seven decades. Between her junior and senior years of college, Patricia traveled by train to Yellowstone to spend the summer working there, an adventure she would remember fondly throughout her life. While working in the park, she met Robert Rinnan, a young man from Iowa who was also spending the summer there. Their relationship blossomed through a long-distance courtship during their senior year of college, and the two were married on June 29, 1952.

Following her graduation in May 1951, Patricia completed her student teaching at Hononegah High School before accepting a position teaching Home Economics at Savanna High School. After their marriage, Patricia and Robert settled in Colorado, where she continued her teaching career at Cole Junior High School in Denver. Following the birth of their first child, Patricia devoted herself full-time to creating a warm and welcoming home for her family, a role she embraced with remarkable talent and dedication. The family returned to Rockford in 1958, where Patricia and Robert built a life centered on faith, friendship, hospitality, and service. Robert preceded her in death on August 7, 1991.

Patricia was known for her warmth, creativity, and exceptional homemaking talents. She delighted in preparing nutritious home-cooked meals, entertaining family and friends, and creating welcoming gatherings for those she loved. Family members fondly remembered her ability to make a house feel like a home, whether through a holiday celebration, a dinner party, or a simple gathering around the table. The skills she developed through her education and teaching career found daily expression in the home she created for her family and the care she showed to those around her.

Blessed with remarkable patience and attention to detail, Patricia was a gifted seamstress and restorer who took great pride in preserving treasured family keepsakes. She restored items including Robert's Navy chest, children's rocking chairs, toys, and other beloved possessions, believing old things could be given new life and purpose. She lovingly sewed doll clothes, hemmed countless dresses for her granddaughters, and made curtains and other household items for family members over the years. Whatever the project, Patricia was committed to doing it well and was always generous in sharing her time and talents with others.

Patricia also dedicated herself to serving others through volunteer work, including Meals on Wheels and a children's clothing ministry. A faithful member of Westminster Presbyterian Church for more than 60 years, she found great meaning in her church and their community. She remained active in the Norton Circle Group until her passing and enjoyed her time with the former Mariners Presbyterian Circle group, among so many other church groups and activities. She also treasured the many friendships she cultivated over the years through her bridge clubs, the Friday Fish Fry group, and "The Good Old Gals," a cherished group of Northern Illinois University friends whose bond endured long after their college days.

A woman of diverse interests, Patricia appreciated both the comforts of home and opportunities to continue learning throughout her life. She enjoyed attending symphony performances, theater productions, and other arts events, and was always eager to experience something new.

Patricia's curiosity and love of new experiences carried naturally into a lifelong passion for travel. Traveling remained one of her greatest joys. She and Robert enjoyed adventures throughout the United States and Europe, creating memories that spanned decades. Following Robert's death, she continued traveling with her beloved cousin, Margaret Diedrich, until Margaret's passing in 2024. Patricia especially loved sharing her passion for travel and learning with her grandchildren, taking each of them on an Elderhostel program, now known as Road Scholar, and later enjoying Disney cruises and family getaways together. Through her example, she passed along a love of learning, exploration, and time spent with family that will continue for generations.

She will be missed by those who loved her most, her children Mark (Letty Sargent), Cindy (Kerry) Pippel, and Carolyn (Larry) Carlson; grandchildren Jarrett and Dean Rinnan, Kyle (Joy) Pippel, Kelsey Johnson, Kaitlyn (Dave) Mazur, Nicole (Ira) Ray, Britta (Anthony) Riashi, and Krista (Fiancé Dan Lenzini) Carlson; great grandchildren Mia and Emma Johnson, William and Carrigan Mazur, Lawren and Linden Ray, Anthony “Bruno” Jr., and Ruth Riashi; nieces and nephews Cathy (Bill) Wilson, Susan (Scott) McLean, John (Hermenia) Prather, David (Lauri) Prather and their families. She is predeceased by her beloved husband Robert, and her brother John (Sandra) Prather.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to a growing circle of friends from Comfort Keepers who assisted the family in providing her care. She developed an especially strong bond with Diana Ward who was by her side for 9 years. Patricia often referred to her as her best friend, and Diana’s creativity and care were essential to Pat's quality of life in her final years.

Visitation will take place on Monday, September 14, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of funeral service, 11:00 a.m. at Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory, 1860 S. Mulford Road, Rockford, Illinois 61108. Burial to follow in Greenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider memorials to an Alzheimer’s organization of your choice or to Meals on Wheels, where Patricia volunteered religiously, payable to Lifescape Community Services.
