Obituary

Sharon F. Peterson, 87, a beloved figure known for her competitive spirit and unwavering devotion to family, passed away on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, in Rockford. She was born in Saint Joseph, Missouri on August 22, 1938, the daughter of Elzie and Mary Jane (Chesney) Timmons. She married Gilbert Peterson in 1960 in Rockford where they remained married for over 65 years.

For many years, Sharon dedicated herself to serving the community through her work at the post office until her well-earned retirement.

A true sportswoman, Sharon embraced life’s adventures with enthusiasm. She played an array of sports including softball, pickleball, tennis, and bowling, showcasing her competitive nature and zest for life. Her membership at the Sandy Hollow Golf Course brought her great happiness as she spent countless memorable hours on the greens, often joined by her husband, sharing rounds of golf that formed the fabric of many cherished memories. She looked forward each year to the girls’ trips she took with her dear family the “Moosettes.”

Sharon’s personality was a unique blend of strength and kindness. She was a caring soul, forever concerned about the well-being of those around her, yet her wonderful sense of humor and quick wit brought light and laughter into every room she entered.

Her family always came first, and her love for them was evident in all she did. Indeed, her proudest accomplishments were her grandchildren and her beloved great-grandchild, who were the center of her heart and the very essence of her joy. Sharon’s affection extended beyond people; she loved dogs dearly, considering them a part of her family.

She is survived by her loving husband, Gilbert Peterson; her children, Gil (Kelly) Peterson and Kim (Russ) Haile; her grandchildren Brielle (Jon) Kuchinski, Liam Peterson, and Ainsley Peterson; her great granddaughter, Hazel Mae; her sisters, Joy (Richard) Weyhmiller and Linda (Michael) Salmon; her niece, Amber (Ira) Haugen; and her nephew, Nick (Kyle Keane) Weyhmiller. She is preceded in death by her parents.

A special thank you to the caring staff at Anam Glen.
