Alan J. Werner

Alan J. Werner passed away peacefully on Monday, August 17, in his home with his family at his side. He was born in Jefferson, Wisconsin on January 8, 1947, to Norbert and Lorraine (Haas) Werner. Al married Ann Dempsey on June 20, 2005. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in civil engineering from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. A natural and thoughtful engineer, Al liked to design and make things himself. He worked as a civil engineer and project manager for several private companies. Al also worked for the City of Rockford for 15 years, where he served as Public Works Director. During his career, he was active in professional organizations, including ISPE and APWA; he served as president of the Illinois Chapter of APWA. Al had many hobbies and interests. He especially enjoyed golfing, cooking, gardening, winemaking, tennis, skiing, sailing, reading and traveling. He retired early to devote his time to the passion most dear to his heart: being a nurturing dad and encouraging his daughter to grow and learn. Al had a quiet way of touching lives with gentle acts of kindness; he could always be counted on to help others.
Alan is survived by his wife, Ann; his daughter, Andrea; son, Ryan; mother, Lorraine Werner; sisters, Mary Lynn (Dennis) Vogel and Anne Marie (Warren) Werner Smith; niece, Mindy (Dave) Witte; nephew, Jeremy (Jenny) Vogel. He is predeceased by his father, Norbert.
A gathering to Remember and Celebrate Al’s life will take place on September 13, 2015, at Forest Hills Country Club, 5135 Forest Hills Road, Rockford, IL 61114; open house from 2:00 to 5:00 P.M. A private service for the family will be held at Emmanuel Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers or memorials, please do something fun with your family or a loved one in memory of Al.
