Daryl B. Harmon

Daryl Bliss Harmon, 90, of Loves Park, formerly of Rockford, passed away peacefully at Lincolnshire Place assisted living facility.

Daryl was born July 3, 1931 in Stark County, the son of Rutherford Bliss Harmon and Margaret E. (Newman) Harmon. He is survived by his wife Joan L. (Kuhn) Harmon, daughter Jane (Richard) Leider of San Francisco, California, sons Matthew Bliss (Dana Welte) Harmon of Rockford, and Thomas (Linda Zubke) of Merced, California, six grandchildren, Anna and Fae Harmon, and Healy and Eleanor Leider of San Francisco, California, Maximilian Harmon of Rockford, and Jacob Bliss (Natasha Barraza) Harmon and their daughter, Mariana, of Chicago. Daryl is preceded in death by children Susan and Mark Harmon, brother Keith Harmon, and sisters Margaret “Kay” Harmon and Joyce (Harmon) Hatfield.

Daryl grew up in Toulon, IL where he was an outstanding athlete, lettering in football, basketball, and track at Toulon High School. He went on to earn a degree in biology from Western Illinois University where he tried a new sport, joining the gymnastics team to collect a scholarship covering his room and board. While his fishing and golf skills were questionable, to say the least, he remained passionate about participating in both sports throughout his life.

Daryl served as a U.S. Army medic in the early 1950s, taught high school, and eventually settled into a career as a State Farm Insurance agent for more than 40 years. Most importantly, he was a loving husband and father, and a great friend to many co-workers, clients, and neighbors. He was active in his parish, St. Peter’s Cathedral, and a regular volunteer in support of less fortunate people. He and Joan traveled the world with friends and family.

Daryl will live on in the hearts of his family and friends. He is now a part of us, as we remember him.

A Celebration of Daryl's Life will be held on Saturday September 10, 2022 from 12:00-3:00 PM at the University Club of Rockford, 945 N Main St, Rockford, IL 61103.
