Delbert L. Lemonds

December 14, 1920 — January 3, 2021

LEMONDS, Delbert Lionel, age 100, passed away peacefully on January 3 at the home in Loves Park, Illinois, that he shared with his son, Dennis, his faithful and selfless caregiver during his final years.

Delbert was born in Kennett, Missouri on December 14, 1920. He was raised near Kennett, Missouri, where he grew up on the family farm with his parents, Myrtle and Charles Lemonds and his seven siblings. Delbert was married for 60 years to the love of his life, Lillian Lemonds (Essary), who preceded him in death in 2002.

Delbert proudly served in the Army Air Corps during World War II in England, Germany, and France, during which he repaired reconnaissance planes for General Patton. After the war, he worked as a police officer in his hometown of Kennett. In 1950, he moved with Lillian and their son, Dennis, to Rockford, Illinois, where Delbert made a permanent home for his family and worked as a loyal employee of Rockford Machine Tool for over 30 years before moving on to Janar Tool and Publishers Equipment. After retiring, Delbert continued to work part-time at Bob’s Hardware and Farm & Fleet in Rockford.

Delbert was known by all as a generous man who cared for his family and friends and who was happy to lend a hand to anyone who needed it. He and Lillian cultivated a vast garden for many years and shared their harvests with family and friends. Throughout the years, many of Lillian’s beloved nieces and nephews were welcomed into their home. In addition to being a loyal husband and father, Delbert was a loving and generous grandfather to Regina’s children, Ryan and Rob, as well as his great-grandson, Phineas.  Delbert was a pool shark, a passionate St. Louis Cardinals fan, a voracious reader, and an excellent storyteller. He had a genuine gift for making friends with total strangers, thanks in no small part to his warmth, good humor, and a joy of life that was contagious. Delbert was a very determined man who accomplished his final goal of making it to his 100th birthday and celebrating with his immediate family.

Delbert is survived by his children, Dennis Lemonds and Regina Shaw (Robert); his siblings Doris June, Glenda, and Connie; his grandchildren Rob (Alexandra) and Ryan (Anne), and his great-grandson Phineas (“The Boy”); numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.  He is preceded in death by his wife, Lillian; his parents, Myrtle and Charles; and his siblings Charlene, Wilburn, Ravaughn, and Betty Lou.

Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the family will not be receiving relatives and friends for a traditional visitation and funeral. A celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date. The family would also like to express gratitude for the excellent care Delbert was given by OSF Hospice, Senior Helpers, and the Veterans’ Associations of Rockford and Madison. Donations may be made to OSF Hospice Home. Donations may be sent to: OSF Hospice at 9951 Rock Cut Crossing, Loves Park, IL (write Delbert’s name in the memo).
