Dewey C. Gray

Dewey C. Gray, 88, of Rockford, Illinois, passed away March 27, 2020 surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Poteau, Oklahoma on March 20, 1932, the son of Columbus and Ethel Gray. Dewey was united in marriage on May 7, 1955 to Nancy Ciancone at St. James Catholic Church. He worked for Coca-Cola Bottling Company, then spent many years with National Lock until it closed in the early 1980’s. Dewey loved to read. He also built many decks and enjoyed renovating homes. He was a charter member of the American Lombardi Club Auxiliary, as well as a member of the Verdi Club. Both he and Nancy loved cooking for the Lombardi Club. Left to cherish his memory his daughter, Vickie (Gary) Hilker; grandchildren, Eric Drager, Todd (Susette) Drager, Jennifer (Tony) Smith, and Jamie Kilgore; great-grandchildren, Ryan, Tyler, Skylar, Grant, Gina, Gabriel, Hyrum, John, Liberty, Ariahnna, Kingston, Jamir, and Willie; great-great-grandchild, Brynley; and nieces and nephews, Joe (Joyce) Deferville, Christine (Patrick) Gerval, Mark (Susan) Ciancone, Peter Ciancone, Mary “Sue” (David) Garman, Allen (Eleanor) Wales, and Larry Wales. He was predeceased by his wife, Nancy; parents; daughter, Bonnie Drager; son, Charles L. Gray; granddaughter-in-law Lori Drager; grandson, Matthew McCarter; sister and brother-in-law, Dora (Harry) Wales; brothers, Carrol Gray, Bryan Gray, Douglas Gray, and Leonard Gray. Our deepest gratitude goes to the entire, most exceptional staffs of Independence Village, River Bluff Nursing Home and its Dove Unit. Dewey was very grateful for the professional, respectful, and always loving care shown to him by these 2 organizations. A Memorial Service will be scheduled when the COVID-19 restrictions are lifted.
