Doris Evelyn (Mann) Degroote

Doris Evelyn (Mann) DeGroote, 101, died peacefully in her home, surrounded by her family, September 18, 2009. she was born September 4, 1908 in Shirland, Illinois. She was the only child of Millard Mann and Myrtie (McKinley) Mann. Started school in Burke, SD. Graduated from Durand High School and earned a B.S. degree at the University of Illinois in 1929. While there she was a member of the Womens Rifle Team. She taught third-fourth grade classes at Durand Elementary School for 10 years. In 1941 she married Fred (Bud) K. DeGroote. Two daughters were born of this union: Judith Lynn and Phyllis Jane. Bud died in 1964. Doris lived in Rockford since 1947, and was a long time Chicago Cubs fan. She was also the pastry chef at West High School for many years. She was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd.
Survivors include daughters, Judith (Louie) Cady of Morrison, Illinois and Phyllis (Dennis) Cook of Delavan, Wisconsin; granddaughter Felicia (Mark) Schmidt of Richmond, Michigan; great-grandchildren Ben, Matt, Halley and Jake; step-grandchildren, Gail (David) Sands of Deforest, Wisconsin and Gary Hunt of Michigan; many cousins, nieces and nephews and three step great grandchildren, Jennifer, Amber and Ryan.
Funeral service at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 22, 2009 in Fitzgerald Funeral Home amp; Crematory, Riverside Chapel, 3910 N. Rockton Ave. with Rev. Luverne Runestad officiating. Burial in Twelve Mile Grove Cemetery. Visitation from 10:00 a.m. until time of the service on Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd.
