Douglas B. Smith

September 28, 1952 — November 15, 2014

Douglas B. Smith, 62, Rockford, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Saturday, November 15, 2014, after a long, courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Harvey, IL on September 28, 1952, to Nelson and Barbara Smith. He worked for his father’s company, Rockford Oil Company, where he served as Vice President until he retired in 2005. Doug married his loving wife, Lana Barmore, on November 1, 1975, and they had two daughters, Dana and Lisa. He was very proud of his daughters and their accomplishments. Doug was an avid life-long sports fan, spending many of his favorite moments cheering on his beloved Iowa Hawkeyes, the Chicago White Sox and “Da Bears”. Doug was an accomplished golfer, having had a total of four holes-in-one. He inherited his love of golf from his maternal grandfather, whom he respected and admired greatly. He loved playing softball, boating and spending time at the craps table in Las Vegas. He loved spending the winters in Marco Island, Florida, where he and his wife formed many lasting friendships. He was a past member of Mah-Nah-Tee-See Country Club and a current member of Forest Hills Country Club, the Lombardi Club, Marco Island Moose Club and the Marco Island Senior Softball League. He is survived by his parents, Nelson and Barbara Smith; wife Lana Smith; daughters, Dana (Tyler) Palmer, Lisa (Nick) Scribner; grandchildren, Avery, Alexandra and Tyson Palmer; Liviya, Colton and Jace Scribner; brother Greg (Kim) Smith, sister Nancy (Dennis) Klahn; several nieces and nephews.
