Dr. Joseph A. Zammuto, of Rockford, IL, devoted husband, father and grandfather, was born to eternal life surrounded by family on January 24, 2024, at the age of 90.
Joseph was born on June 2, 1933 in Rockford, IL, the second son of Angelo and Rose (Rizzo) Zammuto. He graduated from Rockford West High School and attended Washington University where he received his B.A. and M.S degrees. He married Therese Marinelli on August 18, 1962 at St. Anthony of Padua Church in Rockford, where they first met on the steps in front of the church. She was the love of his life and their marriage spanned 61 years. Shortly after marriage, they relocated to Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas where he served in the Medical Service Corps. Upon completion of his military obligation, he entered St. Louis University School of Medicine where he received his M.D., completed his pediatric internship and residency, and became a father of four daughters. Upon completion of his medical training, he returned home to Rockford and began his pediatric practice at Rockford Clinic, where he worked joyously for 42 years. His work was a vocation, made witness by the numerous middle-of-the-night hospital trips and house calls, and the care, concern, and respect with which he treated his patients. He positively touched so many lives through his quiet and selfless acts. Joseph was a true and faithful servant of God.
Joseph is survived by his wife Therese; their children Rosanne (Gregory) Cofoid, Velia (Mickey Barlow) Zammuto, Angela (Todd) Markowski, and Maria Zammuto Bjork (Brandon Gasmund); grandchildren Christian and Caroline Cofoid, Anthony and Alec Saporiti, Matthew and Sophia Markowski and Danielle (Shane) Seaton and Christa Bjork (James Hotchkiss); great-grandchildren Ella, Kaden, Isabella and Liam, numerous nieces and nephews and sister-in-law Jeanie Marinelli.
He was predeceased by his parents, brother Peter A. Zammuto, sister-in-law Rose Mary Zammuto, brothers- and sisters-in-law Frank and Laura Marconi, Louis and Betty Marinelli, and Frank Marinelli.
