Im going home, to heaven

Edith Mae Bennett, 86, of Rockford, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 12, 2012 in her home surrounded by her family. Born in Rockford on October 4, 1925. Edith lived her life to the benefit of others. She loved God, her children and George her husband of 67 years. She devoted her life to their happiness and raising their five children as Christians. Her faith in the Lord gave her the courage to reach out and help others in her community. While caring for her family she made a career of selling World Book Encyclopedias door to door. Edith truly believed that World Book opened the door to educating young minds. Hundreds of families in the Rockford area believed in Ediths message. She became a top performer in the state of Illinois achieving highest honors in her 40 year career. Throughout her life Edith gave of her time and resources to Big Sisters, Rockford Share Fest, Business women dressing women, working at the local polling place on election day, singing in her church choir, volunteering countless hours for church fundraisers and sponsoring Laotian families coming into the U.S.

George Bennett and Edith Holmes were married on July 15, 1945, in the parsonage of Emmanuel Lutheran Church. They raised five children, Steve (Kris) Bennett of Townville, SC, Ken Bennett, Rick Bennett, Carol (Kim) Lawler of Rockford, Larry Bennett, in heaven, survived by Carol in Texas; eight grandchildren, Kellen, Kurtis and Christopher Lawler, Christopher Bennett, Alecia Bennett, Grant Parsons Bennett, Steve and Rich Bennett; three greatgrandchildren, Brooklyn Bennett, Lathan Bennett and Tyler Bennett, in heaven. They were all raised to love life, share with those who need and be honest.

The family would like to give a special thank you to Serenity Hospice for their kindness and care.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 16, 2012 at Fitzgerald Funeral Home amp; Crematory, 1860 S. Mulford Rd. Rockford with Pastor Doug Thiesen officiating. Burial in Willwood Burial Park. Visitation will be held from 2:00 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 15 at the funeral home and also from 10:00am until time of service on Monday. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Janet Wattles or Rockford Food Pantry.
