Gaylon Garth Mace

April 16, 1925 — March 22, 2013

Gaylon Garth Mace 87 of Rockford passed away Friday March 22, 2013 in Swedish American Hospital. He was born April 16, 1925 in Ottumwa, IA. The son of Joseph and Elva Mace. He served in the Navy during WWII in A CUB Unit for 33 Months in the South Pacific. He married Marcella Ranken in Davis Junction on February 14, 1948, they were married for 65 years. Gaylon worked at George H. Spengler for many years, retiring in 1994. Attended Alpine Lutheran Church and was a member of Steward Methodist Church in Steward, IL. Rotary Club Loves Park, serving at one time as president, ASQ Association, Former board member at Rock Valley College and Loves Park VFW. Gaylon was also the first scout leader in Steward, IL, and went on to be associated with the Boy Scouts for all his life. Also the main character in Gargantuan Gaylon Garth from Cherry Valley Grade School. He loved photography, Fishing and Family.
Survivors include his wife Marcella. Two Children, Terry (Cindy) Mace of St. James, MN and Connie (Richard) Dowling of Cherry Valley. Four grandchildren, Kelly (Tim) Augustine of Iowa, Tiffany Mace of MN, Tim Dowling of Cherry Valley and Tammy (Lukas) Burkon of Poplar Grove. Great grandchildren, Brittney (Tyler) Hill, Cody Augustine, Nick and Ashley Mace and Austin Burkon. Sisters, Sheryl (Raymond) Preiss of Shirland, Loree Bailey of Rockford and Joetta Wyatt of Loves Park. Predeceased by his parents, infant Brother Norland. Sister, Veon Severinghous. Brother-in-laws, Stanley Severinghous, Bill Bailey and Gail Wyatt.
Funeral service at 2pm Tuesday March 26, 2013 in Alpine Lutheran Church 5001 Forest View Avenue Rockford, IL 61108 . Visitation from 1pm until service time Tuesday in the church. Burial the following day at 9:30am Wednesday March 27, 2013 in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Arrangements completed by Fitzgerald Funeral Home Mulford Chapel.
