George "Bill" Coffey

August 24, 1934 — February 4, 2016

George W. “Bill” Coffey, 81, a lifelong resident of Rockford, died Thursday, Feb. 4, 2016 at Amberwood Care Center. Born August 24, 1934 the son of William F. and Margaret L. (Webster) Coffey. Graduated in 1953 from St. Thomas High School and attended Montana State University. Married his loving wife Esther Jean Smale at St. Peters Cathedral on June 10, 1955. He was a proud 45 year member of Laborers’ Local 32. He began his construction career working as a plaster tender with mid-States Const. Systems, helping build Cherry Vale Mall. During his membership he served as President, Field Rep. and Secretary Treasurer from 1972 until 1991 at which time he became a Field Rep. for No. Central Ill. Laborers’ District Council in Peoria, IL. He retired from that position in 1995. Bill loved to play card games like poker and bridge with his friends and family. He was a kind and caring man who cherished his family and friends, he will be deeply missed. Survivors include his wife, Esther; daughters, Carol (Bill Carlstrom) Coffey and Karen Coffey-Nielsen all of Rockford; grandchildren, Corey (Brandi) Coffey, Amber Coffey, Devin (Kelsey) Black, Robert (Nikki) Black and Hunter Carlstrom, Billy Carlstrom and Allie Carlstrom; great grandchildren, Devine, Aymond, Dominick, Destine, Wyatt, Alexander and Monique; siblings, Robert J. (Judy) Coffey of Las Vegas, NV, Donald (Gayle) Alberts of Rockton and Debbie (Dennis) Kittle of Rockford; brother-in-law, Don Kersey of Corning, AR and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Sheryl Kersey. The family requests that any donations be made in his name to VNA Hospice.
