George Henry Mittendorf, Jr, 74, Rockford, passed away suddenly Thursday, September 22, 2011, at Transylvania Regional Hospital in Brevard, NC. Born October 16, 1936 in Providence County, Rhode Island; the son of George Sr. and Thelma (Lawson) Mittendorf. Married Bunny Rabbe on August 15, 1959 in Atlanta, GA. George graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, VA, class of 1959 with a degree in Civil Engineering.He attended graduate school at Iowa State University.Following graduate school, George served with the Army Corps of Engineers for 2 years in Mineral Wells, TX. From 19631970,he was employed by the Newport News Ship Building and Dry Dock Co. in Newport News, VA.In 1970, they moved to Rockford where he worked at Woodward Governor Co. in their Hydraulic Turbine Division until 1984.George worked at the Woodward Governor Co. plant in Slough, England as plant manager from 19841988. After returning to Rockford, George worked in the Aircraft Division of Woodward Governor Co. until his retirement in 1995. During his retirement, George was active with and an advocate of Illinois Growth Enterprises, serving on the board of directors for many years lending his engineering and business development experience. George and Bunny enjoyed their time together at their mountain home in Brevard, NC, located in the Smokey Mountains outside of Ashville. Survived by wife, Bunny; sons, Tim and Peter Mittendorf. Predeceased by parents.Funeral Service at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, October 3, 2011 at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Mulford Chapel 1860 S. Mulford Rd. with visitation from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service.
