Gerald N. “Jerry” Weightman, 92, of Rockford passed away Friday June 28, 2013, in his home. He was born August 2, 1920, in Rockford, the son of Roland and Margaret (Burke) Weightman. He married Elizabeth Clausen on October 3, 1953, at St. Peter’s Church in Rockford. Jerry was a graduate of St. Thomas High School Class of 1938 and served in the U.S. Army from 1942-1945. He was a Chaplain’s Assistant serving with the 303rd Station Hospital at Lilford Hall, Northhamptonshire, England. He was an engineer at Twin Disc for many years, retiring in 1982. Faith and family were his foundation. A member of St. Patrick’s Parish on School Street for more than five decades; in his later years he returned to the parish of his youth, St. James. He was a lector and Eucharistic Minister at both St. Patrick’s and St. James. Jerry was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a volunteer at both St. Patrick’s and Cornucopia Food Pantries. He was proud of his participation in the Civil Rights March on Washington, DC in 1963, with the group from Rockford. He enjoyed many days nurturing his 13 acres in Ogle County. The pictures that line his dining room wall attest to his love of family. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Elizabeth “Betty”; their ten children, Gerald (Mary Frances), Martin (Patricia), Margaret (John Knaack) Weightman, Catherine (David Moore) Weightman-Moore, Paul (Janice), Teresa (Stanley Moore) Weightman-Moore, Cecilia (Andrew Tobin) Weightman-Tobin, Peter (Laura), Elizabeth (Michael Bragg) Weightman and Philip (Andrea). 29 grandchildren, Sarah, Matthew, Thomas (Krystle), Michelle (Nick), Stephanie (Jeff), Monica, Gregory, Michael, Stephen, Nicholas, Janessa, Matisse, Andrew, Megan, Ryan, Clare, Joseph, Daniel, Emily, Abigail, Ian, Owen, Amelia, Liam, Aidan, Elizabeth, Evan, Adam, and Erin; two great grandchildren, Wyatt and Lily, Betty’s brothers and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Predeceased by his parents; grandchildren, Monica Elizabeth and Brendan William; two sisters, Marion Aileen Eustice and Margaret Monica, a brother, John Roland; brother-in-law, Jim Eustice. Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am Saturday, July 6, 2013, in St. James Catholic Church, 428 N. Second St., Rockford with Father Dean Russell, Pastor of St. James Church officiating, and brother-in-law Monsignor William Clausen and Father David Beauvais concelebrating. Burial will be at St. Mary’s/St. James Cemetery, Rockford. Visitation from 5pm until 7pm Friday in Fitzgerald Funeral Home, 3910 North Rockton Ave. with Scripture service at 7pm.
