Katherine M. "Kay" Mondul

Katherine M. "Kay" Mondul, 92, Rockford, passed away Wednesday, April 2, 2014, at Fairhaven Christian Retirement Center. She was born September 3, 1921, in Westport, CT., the daughter of John and Mary Capetanidis. Kay was a 1939 graduate of Staples High School in Westport, CT. She married David D. Mondul in Miami, FL on February 20, 1954. He passed away on May 27, 2005. Kay was employed as a secretary at Rock Valley College for 18 years, retiring in 1989. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. Kay and her husband were longtime members and volunteers at the Mendelssohn Performing Arts Center where they were the recipients of the Starr of Excellence Award in 2002. They were the only non-performing recipients of that award. She and Dave traveled extensively together and even lived in Istanbul, Turkey for 3 years.
Survived by her children, Donald (Ann) Mondul of Seeley Lake, MT, Dennis (Char) Mondul of Palm Beach Gardens, FL, Dr. Mark (Joanne) Mondul of St. Charles, and Kathy (Jerry) Stevens of Rockford; her grandchildren, Alison, Ashley, David (Shae), Michael (Alana), Nathan (Gail), Andrew, and Corey Mondul, Sam (Claire) and Tim Castree, and Tiffany (Jay) Greg; her great grandchildren, David, Maddie, Emma, Adin, Mikenna, Morgan, Percy, Mia, Taylor, Nick and Carly. Predeceased by her husband of 51 years, David; sisters, Ann Byers, Olga Aronow, and Fanny Milkavich; and her brother, Peter Capetanidis.
Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at Holy Family Catholic Church, 4401 Highcrest Rd. with Father David J.Reece officiating. Burial in St. Mary/St. James Catholic Cemetery. Visitation from 5:00P.M. until 7:00 P.M., Monday, April 7, 2014, at Fitzgerald Funeral Home and Crematory, Mulford Chapel, 1860 S. Mulford Rd. Rockford, 61108, with a time of sharing at 7:00 P.M. and a visitation again from 10:00A.M. until 10:45 A.M. on Tuesday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mendelssohn Performing Arts Center, 415 N. Church St. Rockford, 61103, or Fairhaven Christian retirement Center, 3470 N. Alpine Rd. Rockford, 61114.
