Kay J. Schwalbach

May 27, 1934 — December 23, 2020

Kay J Schwalbach, 86, of Rockford, IL passed away December 23rd, with her family at her side. Kay lived with Alzheimer’s for 12 years but sadly after contracting COVID-19 it was just too much for her. Kay was the daughter of Kress and Elaine Reavie, she was born May 27th in Cheboygan, MI and grew up in St. Ignace on the shores of Lake Michigan. She graduated from Northern Michigan University with a degree in Elementary Ed and later earned her Master’s Degree at Northern Illinois University.

While attending Northern Michigan University, Kay met, and within a year married the love of her life, Tom Schwalbach. Kay taught 2nd grade for a few years in Michigan prior to coming to Rockford in 1962. Together they joined Aldersgate Methodist Church and quickly made special friends while becoming active members.

Kay taught second grade in RPS 205, primarily Froberg School, her entire career. She loved planning trips throughout the country and around the world. After retiring, Tom and Kay enjoyed traveling with close friends. Summers were spent with their children and grandchildren at their family cottage on Lake Michigan and winters at their place in Ft. Myers Fl. Along the way Tom and Kay joined Christ United Methodist Church where they made more cherished friends. Kay was involved in many activities within the church but her favorites were being a part of the church choir and having their traditional Sunday breakfast with their church round table group at the Stockholm Inn. Kay loved history, reading, playing the piano, games, and politics, but her greatest joy were her grandchildren. Tom and Kay were blessed to be married for 63 years, had three children and six grandchildren. She will be greatly missed and forever loved.

Kay is survived by her ever loving and dedicated husband, Tom: son, Jeff Schwalbach of Hollywood, FL, Scott (Gretchen) Schwalbach and daughter, Melissa (Tom) Budd: grandchildren, Sam, Abby and Adam Budd, Jack and Ben Schwalbach; brother, Edward Reavie of St. Ignace, Michigan; nephew, Sean and special niece, Danielle.

Predeceased by her parents and granddaughter, Sophie June Schwalbach.
