Marilyn Crooks

Marilyn Joyce Crooks, 76, of Rockford, IL, returned to our heavenly home on Tuesday, June 26, 2012. She was born in Ottumwa, IA on January 8, 1936, the youngest of twelve children, to parents Frank and Amanda Bruch. As a young girl, Marilyn developed her talents in piano, school and church choir, writing, sewing and academics. She authored her high schools senior class graduation song and participated in choral competitions. After graduating from Ottumwa (IA) High School in 1954, Marilyn set aside teaching ambitions and began her career with John Deere Company. She retired in 1996 completing 20 years of service with the Social Security Administration in (Rockford, IL). As a single working mom, she helped pave the way for future women to be accepted and valued in societys then traditionally male workplace. In retirement, her hobbies expanded into gardening and cross stitch. Marilyn was a loyal fan of Illinois and Iowa college basketball. Her qualities that live on in her children include: perseverance, strong work ethic, creativity, financial sensibility and faith in God.

Marilyn is survived by her husband, Mel; children, Marcia (Leo) Engstrom of Lynnwood, WA, Jon (Deanna) Berg of Rockford, IL and Jan Berg, Jr. of Marshfield, WI; two grandchildren, Jason Berg and Kyle Berg both of Rockford, IL; sister, Hertha Bruch of Huntley, IL; brothers, Harold (Betty) Bruch of Barrington, IL and Herb (Georgia) Bruch of Reedville, VA; many nieces and nephews; former husband, Jan Berg, Sr. and several stepchildren. Marilyn was predeceased by both parents and several brothers and sisters.

A memorial service will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Belvidere, IL. A private burial at later date in Fairmount Cemetery, Willow Springs, IL. To express condolences online, please visit
