Peter Joseph Zammuto 81, died Friday July 8 th , at SwedishAmerican Hospital surrounded by his loving wife and family.nbsp; He was born Aug. 23, 1929 in Rockford, the beloved son of Joseph and Susannbsp; (Collura) Zammuto.
Peter graduated from West High School in 1948, graduated from the University of Illinois with a BS Degree in Management in 1952 and Northern Illinoisnbsp; University with a Masters in Business Administration in 1974.nbsp; Completed numerous courses at the Air University and the War College while in the Air Force Reserves.nbsp; He volunteered in the Air Force in 1952 as a 2 nd Lt. and was a Budget Officer for the Air Proving Ground Command at Eglin Air Force Base innbsp; Florida.nbsp; Served two years active duty and eighteen yearsnbsp; in the Air Force Reserves and Retired as a Major. He married Carm Licari in 1953.
He worked in the family business Blackhawk Bottling Company andnbsp; then worked for the Department of Defense for the Defense Contract Management Command (DCMC) and Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) for twenty-four years.nbsp; He served on the Commands EEO Committee for twenty years.nbsp; He also was a member of the DCMC First Class Professional Organization.nbsp; Received Honors for serving in the Special Emphasis Program.nbsp; He was awarded for Cost Saving Measures for DCMC as a Certified Acquisition Professional, along with numerous other awards and recognitions.
He was a member of the Cavour Italian American Club, Senior Holy Name Society, Defense Contractors Association and was recognized and awarded for twenty-four years of Dedicated Federal Service from August 1976 to October 2002. Was a longnbsp; time member of Saint Anthony of Padua parish and then Holy Family parish both in Rockford.His interests were his family, church, community, aviation and also an avid reader in these areas.nbsp;
Survived by his wife and children, Susan (Joseph) Castrogiovanni, Joseph P. (Rebecca) Zammuto, Mary (Wayne) Nelson and Frank L. Zammuto; grandchildren, Jaymie Nelson, Al (Abbe) Castrogiovanni, Brooke Zammuto, Jessica Zammuto, James W. Nelson and Peter D. Zammuto; great-grandchildren, Kate Grace Castrogiovanni and Mary Susan Castrogiovanni; sister, Angelina (James) Jodie; brother, Louis J. Zammuto; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; brother-in-law, Joseph W. (Joan) Licari and sisters-in-law, Rosemary Nicolosi and Therese M. Ingrassia.nbsp; Predeceased by his parents and brother-in-law, Philip A. Nicolosi.
Funeral Mass at 11:00a.m. Wednesday, July 13, 2011 in St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church with the Franciscan Friars officiating.nbsp; Visitation from 5:30 p.m.-8:00p.m. on Tuesday in Fitzgerald Funeral Home amp; Crematory, Mulford Chapel, 1860 S. Mulford Rd. andnbsp; from 9:30a.m. until 10:45 a.m.on Wednesday at the church.nbsp; Burial in St. Mary/St. James Cemetery.nbsp; A memorial will be determined at a later date by the family.nbsp; The family expresses a special appreciation to Dr. Robert Harner M.D., Paula, Tammy, Fran and Dawn for exemplary medical care.nbsp; Express condolences and share memories at www.fitzgeraldfh.com.
