Phillip Roehrig

Phillip J. Roehrig, 86, of Rockford passed away Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at OSF St. Anthony Medical Center. Born in Ludington, Michigan on June 30, 1927 to Philip M. and Myrtle Roehrig. He was raised in Ludington and served in the United States Army 3rd infantry from 1945 – 1947. After service, Phil attended the University of Notre Dame, graduating in 1951. He worked at Burgess Battery in Freeport, Wood and Brooks Company in Rockford and Buffalo, NY, Wurlitzer Company in DeKalb, Amerock Corp and Camcar Textron, where he served as Engr. Manager until retiring in 1998. During his working years, be obtained 14 US patents. He was a licensed pilot active in the Civil Air Patrol, and volunteered all his life in many areas. He was an active member of Holy Family Parish, where he served as a compassion minister to homebound and hospitalized people and was a 3rd degree member of the Knights of Columbus Holy Family Council 13123 and a 4th degree member of Assembly 190. Phil enjoyed being active at Rock Valley College Center for Learning in Retirement where he taught over 100 classes, mainly regarding WWII and Nazism. He was a past president of the Notre Dame Club of Rockford, a vice-chairman of the Notre Dame Senior Alum Board, chairman and CEO of the Woodhaven Association and on the American Cancer Society Board of Directors. Phillip also served on the OSF St. Anthony Medical Center Foundation Council and served on the National Board of Worldwide Marriage Encounter, along with his wife, Linda.

Survived by his wife, Linda; daughter, Mary; son, Phillip and several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents and brothers, John and Richard.

Memorial mass will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 27, 2013 at Holy Family Catholic Church, 4401 Highcrest Road. Visitation will be on Tuesday, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m at Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory, Mulford Chapel, 1860 S. Mulford Road, with the rosary recited at 6:45 p.m. The visitation will continue on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. at the church.
