Sam Maggio

Sam Frank Maggio died at 8:00 a.m. Thursday, January 07, 2016, at St. Anthony Hospital. Sam was born September 5, 1934, in Rockford, IL, the son of Frank and Lucy (Musso) Maggio. He graduated from West High School in 1954 and was the first college graduate in his family, graduating from Rockford College in 1959. Sam served in the Army as a cryptographer and was stationed in Germany. Sam was a loving husband to Martha Maggio from 1962 until her death in 1978 and Mary Dawson Maggio, who he wed in 1982. Sam was also a wonderful father to his two sons, Frank Samuel Maggio and Patrick Michael Maggio. He opened the first Shopping Bag Supermarket on West State Street in 1969 and subsequently added two additional locations in Rockton, IL and on Charles Street. Sam and Mary subsequently added the Deli Basket restaurant and catering to the Shopping Bag enterprise. In addition to Mary and his two children, Frank and Patrick and their respective spouses, Jay and Amy, Sam is survived by four grandchildren; Nickolas Maggio, Michael Maggio, Joey Domanski, and Mitchell Domanski. Sam will be greatly missed, but all who knew him will always hold dear his passion and devotion to his family, his entrepreneurial drive and numerous accomplishments, and his quick wit and ability to strike up a friendly conversation with anyone.
