Thelma J, Fisk, 90
McDonough, GA- Thelma J. Fisk, formally of Rockford, passed away Saturday, October 11, 2014. Born June 4, 1924 in Evandale, Arkansas to Howard and Sally (Webb) Johnson. She married James Edward Baker on May 2, 1946, and one daughter was born of that union, Janice Carol Baker, who passed away November 1, 1995. On August 15, 1964, Thelma enter into matrimony with Wade Thomas Fisk, and he died in 1980.
After graduating from Drake Elementary School and Wendell Phillips High School in Chicago, IL, Thelma joined the Women’s Auxiliary Corp of the United States Army, where she nursed wounded soldiers back to health during WWII. As a veteran, Thelma continued her education by successfully obtaining a degree from the Worsham College of Mortuary Science. Unfortunately, she graduated during a time when women were not readily accepted in the field of mortuary. Thelma then pursued her passion for nursing by earning a degree in nursing from the Dixon State School of Practical Nursing in 1964.
After relocating to Rockford from Chicago, Thelma utilized her medical training by working as a nurse at Rockford Memorial, SwedishAmerican, and St. Anthony Hospitals, and the H. Douglas Singer Zone Center. Her 20-year nursing career included some private-duty nursing. After retirement, Thelma became a committed foster mother and gave love and care to over 15 newborn children.
Thelma is survived by two sisters Helen J. (Alvin J.) Wesley and Viola E (Andrew) Baker; granddaughter Astrid Mowat and Amber Anderson; great-grandmother to Andrea, Astrid, Cordell, Dante, Dariell, Derrick, Lorenzo, Timothy, and Lillyanna. To all of her “grands”, she is affectionately known as “Granny.”; several nieces, nephews, and cousins Willie Johnson. She is predeceased by parents, brothers Fred Douglas (Maxine) Johnson; Claude Raine Johnson and Harold (Hoover) Johnson; two uncles, Johnny and Robert Johnson. In addition to her biological family, Thelma also enjoyed good relationships with her husband’s family during their lifetimes.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, October 23, 2014 at Total Faith Church, 1250 S. Perryville Rd., Rockford. Visitation will be 9 a.m. until time of service.
