Vel M. Weckerly

June 22, 1927 — February 3, 2018

Vel M. Weckerly, 90, of Loves Park, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on February 3, 2018 in her home at Lincolnshire Place. Born June 22, 1927 in Dixon IL. She graduated from Beloit High School and attended the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Vel married the love of her life, Lee D. Weckerly, in Rockford in 1979. She worked as a congressional aide for Rep. Lynn Martin and was very proud to have met President George Bush, Sr. A devoted Catholic and member of Holy Family Catholic Church, she and Lee taught pre marriage workshops. An avid golfer and fitness enthusiast, she also enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening and traveling to foreign lands with Lee. Most of all, she loved spending time with her grandchildren. All who knew her were touched by her kind heart and loved her great sense of humor. Vel will be truly missed.
Survivors include son, Dave (Karen) Rumer; daughters, Susan Rumer, Sally (Kevin) Ittig and Janet (Brad) Cary; grandchildren David (Aileeah) Rumer, Alex Rumer, Sarah Hauser and Shannon Ittig; brothers, Robert (Mary) Zentz and Eugene (Janet) Zentz; former husband David O. Rumer, Jr. Predeceased by parents, husband Lee and brothers, Sherwood and Donald Zentz.
The family would like to give a special thanks to the staff of Lincolnshire Place, Transitions Hospice and Fr. Phillip Kaim for all their care and support.
