Virginia R. Hammer, 78, of Rockford passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 25, 2014 surrounded by her loving family. She was born on January 1, 1936, the daughter of Earl and Anna (Derrickson) Lutzow, Sr. Virginia married John M. Hammer on October 7, 1956. She worked in activities for various nursing homes throughout the Rockford area and was most recently employed at Alpine Fireside until her retirement in 2003. Virginia was an active member in various clubs and organizations which included; Boy Scouts, Church Women United, Lutheran Association of Scouters, Red Hat Society and was the President of WELCA. She was a devoted member of United Lutheran where she was actively involved in various organizations and committees. Virginia was passionate about her hobbies which included crafting, sewing and baking but her true passion was her family. She was a devoted wife, sister, mother and grandmother who always put them first and cherished their time together.

Virginia is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, John M. Hammer; her sons, John R. (Janace) Hammer, Peter (Kathleen) Hammer and Thomas (Jennifer) Hammer; brothers, Earl (Alyce) Lutzow, Jr. Charles Lutzow and Ernie (Joanne) Lutzow; sisters, Mary Powers, Linda Button and Christine (Jon) Taylor; grandchildren, Jessica (Patrick), John R. (Brittany), Nichole, Sandy (Joseph), Alison, Amanda and Jeremy; great-grandchildren, Brandon, Audrina, Alexis, Jaxson and Samuel; brothers-in-law, Ray Gibbons and Gerald Hammons. Predeceased by her parents and sisters, Ruthie Gibbons and Pat Hammons.

Funeral Service at 12:00 noon on Friday, March 28, 2014 in United Lutheran Church, 3630 Rockton Ave with Pastor Krista Zimmerman officiating. Visitation from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
