Wayne Eldin Simpson

August 8, 1947 — February 14, 2008

Wayne Eldin Simpson, 60, noted pianist, died in his home on February 14, 2008 after a long illness. Born August 8, 1947, the son of Eldin and Josephine Simpson of Hooper, Utah. Wayne graduated from Weber State College in 1971, received his masters of Music degree from Eastman School of music in 1974, and was awarded one of Eastmans highest honors, the coveted and rarely awarded Performers certificate in Piano in 1975. Coached by the famous Cecile Genhart at Eastman School, Wayne then continued with another renowned teacher, Irma Volpe, in New York City. He successfully debuted and was warmly received by critics at New Yorks Carnegie Recital Hall in 1977. While in New York Wayne became principle accompanist for American Ballet Theatre. He played for many of the most famous dancers of the time including Michael Baryshnikov, Alicia Markova, and Fernando Bujones. In 1978 he became music director of the exclusive Botsford School of Dance. He moved to Chicago in 1980 where he once again enjoyed a very successful musical career. He accompanied Suzanne Farrell at the Auditorium Theatre and later became music director of the Chicago City Ballet, working closely with ballet icon Maria Tallchief. In 1991 he retired and moved to Rockford where he enjoyed bading a quiet life tending to his many gardens and pursuing his hobby of collecting Christmas memorabilia. Wayne was a gifted, successful pianist who never forgot his humble origins. He was a very good, and kind man. He is survived locally by his special friends Jeanne Marler, Ben and Mary Garwood, and Ken Conard. In Utah survivors include his parents, three sisters, Sharon, Kathleen and Linda; brother, Roger; their families and extended family. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, February 20, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Lindquist Roy Mortuary, 3333 W. 5600 South, Roy, Utah 84067. Fitzgerald Funeral Home assisted the family locally.
